![]() ![]() It tells the story of a Canadian scientist who comes of age in Cambodia in the 1970s under the Khmer Rouge and her search for a lost friend and mentor. Her fourth book, entitled Dogs at the Perimeter, was translated into eight languages. Her debut novel Certainty, a story of love and loss during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia in World War II, was translated into 16 languages and won a number of awards. Madeleine Thien received acclaim for her novels Certainty and Dogs at the Perimeter. For her next work, a children's book called The Chinese Violin, about a Chinese girl who migrates to Canada with her father and how they adapt to the new country, she collaborated with animation artist Joe Chang. Her first book, Simple Recipes, was a collection of short stories which brought her acclaim in Canada and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Thien was born in Vancouver in 1974, the same year her Chinese-Malaysian family immigrated to Canada. ![]() Her latest novel is set in 1960s Shanghai. ![]() The settings of Madeleine Thien's stories range from Japanese-occupied Malaya to Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. ![]()
